A couple of more (Sub)Urban Planning sites added to EVDS Library Web pages

The Web page in question is the Web Resources page for Urban Studies.

The new sites are described below. Enjoy!

Metropolitan Institute at Virginia Tech
"The Metropolitan Institute at Virginia Tech (MI) conducts basic and applied research on national and international development patterns, focusing on key forces shaping metropolitan growth such as demographics, environment, technology, design, transportation, and governance. It seeks to expand knowledge in urban and metropolitan affairs in order to improve policy and practice, and educate the general public on important issues facing communities. MI shares knowledge through events, presentations, publications, a website and media outreach."
The Institute’s current research program includes 5 major initiative areas and objectives:
The New Metropolis, Fair Growth, Green Regions, Smart Governance, World Cities - assess how major metropolitan areas fit into the world economy and the world system of cities.

Opolis - An International Journal of Suburban and Metropolitan Studies

I just discovered this yesterday and thought I'd put it up here FYI. I've requested that Opolis be added to our catalogue, but in the meantime, you can access it from this blog entry.

It also seems to be a relatively new journal - Volume 1, Issue 1 came out in Winter 2005...perhaps they are looking for submissions?

Anyway, from their Web site:
"Opolis is a semi-annual, peer-reviewed publication. The journal is broad-based and multidisciplinary, inviting submissions from fields across the social and natural sciences. Likewise, the methods used in articles are equally varied and cover a mix of qualitative and quantitative approaches. Opolis also profiles applied work that address ways of improving metropolitan growth."

All articles are available free online at: www.mi.vt.edu/Opolispub1.asp

New Websites Added to the Planning / Urban Studies Pages

Thanks to a great webliography in January's College and Research Libraries News, I've added a few websites to the Planning Web pages
(http://library.ucalgary.ca/subjectpages/
socialsciences/urbanstudies/index.php
)

I'm still updating so more sites will be forthcoming. The ones that have just been added are:

Urban Institute (http://www.urban.org/)
"A nonpartisan economic and and social policy research organization." It includes issues relevant to planners.

Urban Planning Now http://www.urbanplanningnow.com/
Provides links to various planning agencies by state and category. Unfortunately, the job service requires a subscription.

APA New Urbanism Division
(http://www.planning.org/newurbanism/index.htm)

Association of Collegiate Schools of Planning (ACSP)
A "consortium of university-based programs offering credentials in urban and regional planning."

Community Development Society (http://comm-dev.org/)
"...provides leadership to professionals and citizens across the spectrum of community development."

Urban Affairs Association (http://www.udel.edu/uaa/)
An "international professional organization for urban scholars, researchers, and public service providers. UAA exists to:
- Encourage the dissemination of information about urbanism and urbanization
- Support the development of university education, research, and service programs in urban affairs
- Provide leadership in fostering urban affairs as a professional and academic field "

PSA for Friday

I got this Calgary Public Library video from a professional newsletter, so I'm passing it along as a PSA to all U of Calgary staff, students and faculty.

If you've got a valid UofC ID card (hopefully yours), you can go to the MacKimmie Library Circulation Desk (ground floor) and get a "TAL" card. TAL stands for The Alberta Library. With that card you can take out up to 5 CPL books. What sorts of books? Well, watch the video:
